We don’t just navigate the journey.
We ensure the science reaches the patients still waiting.
Our work covers the full arc of drug development - from the earliest strategic decisions to clinical execution and regulatory milestones. Five areas of focus. One integrated partner throughout.
-
Indication Selection • Target Product Profile (TPP) • Asset Strategy
The decisions made early in a program carry disproportionate weight. Which indication to pursue. How to define the target product profile. What development narrative will hold up under regulatory scrutiny and investor pressure. These choices shape every inflection point that follows.
We work alongside your team to define the most clinically and commercially viable path for your asset - not by delivering a framework, but by contributing to the decision-making itself. We have been inside the room where these choices are made at the highest stakes. We bring that standard to every program we touch.
The goal is always the same: ensure that when the critical moments arrive, the strategic foundation is already solid.
Where we add the most value:
Programs at early-stage inflection points, pre-IND or ahead of Phase II
Assets where indication selection will determine long-term program trajectory and commercial potential
Teams preparing for investor or partnership discussions who need a credible, evidence-based development strategy
Does your asset have a clearly defined development path - or is that still the question?

Early Drug Development & Strategy • Rare Disease • Regulatory Pathway
For patients living with rare diseases, time is not abstract - it is urgent. The programs designed to reach them operate under a different set of pressures: smaller patient populations, accelerated but uncertain regulatory pathways, heightened scrutiny and opportunity of study design and end points, and a weight of consequence that should be present in every decision made along the way.
Rare disease is not a specialisation we have added. It is where Apex was built from. We bring the medical, scientific, operational and regulatory depth, creativity and innovation these programs demand, combined with a clear-eyed understanding of what is at stake for the patients these therapies are intended to reach.
We help teams design development strategies, programs and clinical trials that are scientifically rigorous, regulatory-ready, and structured to move at the speed the situation requires.
Where we add the most value:
Orphan drug designation strategy and accelerated regulatory pathway design
Early-phase program structure for rare disease
Study design that holds up under regulatory scrutiny while remaining feasible within the constraints of limited patient populations
Is your rare disease program structured to move at the speed its patients require?

Integrated Development Planning • Critical Path & Decision Support • Cross-functional Integration
A development program spans the whole asset — CMC, nonclinical, clinical and regulatory — across every indication the molecule is taken into.
Programs rarely fail at the strategic crossroads. They fail in the seams between them: when the tox package doesn't cover the dosing duration the protocol assumes, when GMP supply lands after the sites are ready, when a commitment made to a regulator in one indication quietly constrains another. Every function is doing its job. No one owns the interfaces.
Apex provides senior-led program management at asset level. We build and maintain the integrated development plan, identify the true critical path — which in early development runs through drug substance or the tox package more often than through the trial itself — and hold the dependencies between functions. We prepare the decisions your board and governance bodies actually have to make, with the scenarios and criteria attached, so that what reaches the table is a decision rather than a status update.
When dependencies shift or risks surface, you need a partner who is agile, acts with urgency and responds with clarity, not bureaucracy. That’s where our core values “Swiss Precision” and “Action-Oriented Leadership” come in.
Where we add the most value:
Assets approaching IND/CTA, where CMC, nonclinical and clinical timelines must converge on a single date
Biotech teams without in-house program management at the level the asset demands
Programs expanding into a second indication or a second region, where one plan quietly becomes several
Companies where the science is led internally, but no one owns integration across functions
Where execution and vendor performance need holding to the plan, see Clinical Execution & Vendor Oversight.
Is your program structured to execute — or only to plan?

CRO & Vendor Selection • Performance Management • Site Strategy & Clinical Operations • KOL Mapping
Most sponsors do not lose control of a trial during conduct. They lose it during selection, when the scope is written loosely enough that everything later becomes a change order.
Apex acts as the sponsor's proxy across the full vendor lifecycle. We design and run the RFI/RFP, stress-test the bid rather than receive it, and negotiate a scope specific enough to be enforced. Once the study is running, we hold the CRO to it — governance structure, performance metrics that measure delivery rather than activity, change control, and escalation that happens early enough to matter.
The same standard applies downstream: feasibility that reflects the protocol as written, site and country strategy built on where the patients actually are, KOL and investigator mapping, and enrolment assumptions that have been challenged before they appear in a board deck.
We have supervised programs at the level where inclusion criteria get stress-tested and where the distance between what was agreed and what was delivered determines the outcome. This is not administrative project management. It is scientifically informed execution, held to the standard of the strategy it was built to deliver.
Where we add the most value:
Sponsors selecting a CRO for the first time, where the terms set now govern the next three years
Companies without dedicated in-house clinical operations capacity
Programs in conduct where enrolment, quality or vendor performance has begun to drift
Teams where the gap between strategic intent and operational execution has already started to show
Where the wider development plan also needs holding together, see Program Management.
Is your program being executed with the same rigor it was designed with?

Corporate Structure • Interim Leadership • Investor Readiness • Operational Infrastructure
Building a biotech company requires more than scientific credibility and development strategy. It requires an operational and corporate foundation that can carry the program through financing, partnership discussions, regulatory interactions, and the scrutiny that comes with each. Most early-stage teams underestimate this until it becomes an obstacle.
Apex works with founding teams and early-stage biotechs to build the structures that support long-term program success: corporate governance, investor narrative, financing strategy, and the operational infrastructure that underpins credible execution. We have been inside the rooms where these decisions are made at the highest stakes. We bring that experience directly to your company-building journey.
That support can be advisory or hands-on. Where a team needs senior capacity before it can justify a permanent hire, we take the seat rather than comment from beside it — interim and fractional CEO, CMO and COO mandates, with clear objectives and a defined handover to the eventual full-time appointment. Alongside that, we identify and assemble the Scientific Advisory Board, including the charter and cadence that make it a working body rather than a list of names on a slide, and we put in place the corporate structure and operating processes — governance, decision rights, SOPs, vendor oversight — that let a small team execute at the standard a sponsor is held to.
Where we add the most value:
Founding teams preparing for seed or Series A financing who need a credible corporate and operational structure
Teams carrying a program forward without a full leadership bench, where an interim CMO or COO closes the gap until the permanent hire is right
Biotechs at a strategic inflection point - partnering discussions, out-licensing, or platform expansion - where the corporate narrative must be as rigorous as the science
Early-stage companies transitioning from discovery to clinical development who need to build the company around the science
Is your company built to carry your science all the way?
Concentrated sprints or embedded partnerships. The depth is the same.
Some engagements are defined and concentrated: a pre-IND strategy sprint, vendor/CRO selection and oversight, a Phase 2 design, a critical regulatory interaction preparation. Others are longer-term - where Apex functions as embedded scientific, medical, and operational leadership across the full development journey.
Either way: you get the Apex team, the depth, the accountability, and the precision. No layers. No handoffs. Direct access to the people doing the work, at every stage.
